Until eleven years ago, the Gateshead Kehilla was suffering from a lack of formal educational provision for children with special educational needs. Although some services were available within moisdos, it fell far short of meeting the specialised education the children needed. Seeing the gap – and seeking the best chinuch for their own child – Rabbi & Mrs Sugarman stepped up to the plate and started a full-time school for children with special educational needs.

Fast forward to today, and Haskel has evolved into a multi-department fully functioning moisad, a thriving hub of special education in the heart of Gateshead. Having grown from an initial 3 to nearly 30 pupils across four departments, it caters for the full spectrum of disabilities including Down Syndrome, ASD and other rare genetic disorders. With exceptional love and care, pupils are nourished with a well-developed Kodesh and Chol curriculum delivered by experienced professionals.

The school also provides specialist SEN provision to pupils with lesser special educational needs who attend mainstream schools. Through the school's ‘Parachute Provision’, a wider range of children are able to benefit from the school's team of specialist teachers and therapists. As one Menahel said, “They do what we can't do, and through their provision, we do what we can, better.”

Haskel also accommodates pupils from across the UK with an Education, Health and Care Plan who wish to attend Yeshivos and Seminaries in Gateshead. Pupils from North West London have been supported with special education whilst they benefited from the social inclusion with their peers at Gateshead Yeshiva and Beis Chaya Rochel Seminary.

Rabbi Sugarman’s remarkable devotion to the needs of parents and pupils alike is also borne out in ensuring that parents are able to obtain full funding entitlement for their children, and to that end, he draws on years of experience and well-nurtured contacts within the Local Authority to advocate for their needs.

If mainstream schools incur a funding shortfall, a moisad catering for children with additional needs certainly does! Only a few years ago, these children would have been faced with no choice other than attending provision outside of the safety and security of the Kehilla.

Haskel has provided a lifeline for parents seeking chinuch tailored for every child. Children who have unlimited latent potential lying within, just waiting for the right key to unlock it. Children who have barriers to speaking, listening and learning, waiting for his or her parents to find the KEY to unlock their potential. We have the DOOR but you, dear friend, have the key.

Helping And Supporting Kids to Excel in Life is Haskel’s mission.

With your support they will continue delivering on this exalted calling for many more years to come.
