Young carers have hopes and dreams too: freedom to play, success in school, making new friends, or relief from stress and worry. But they shoulder immense physical and mental responsibilities that place their wellbeing at significant risk.
Children as young as 5 are taking on surrogate adult roles to look after loved ones who cannot cope without their support due to sickness, disability, addiction, or mental health problems. They provide ongoing emotional support, personal care, look after younger siblings, and undertake household tasks such as cooking, cleaning and shopping.
