Zichron Menachem (ZM) brings joy to children and young adults with cancer and their families.
ZM supports sick children in Israel while they are in hospital or at home. Our ‘house of dreams’ in Jerusalem offers different programs for both the sick child and his siblings. Recently we opened our ‘Oncological rehabilitative protected kindergarten’ – which is recognised by the Ministry of health.
Zichron Menachem helps people across the board at a time when they need it most, be it information, a second opinion from our “clinic of hope”, or a break from the punishing routine of medical appointments.
Parents and siblings have access to counselling, workshops, respite trips and big brother/big sister programmes, making sure that the entire family is always cared for.
Every three years we run a camp in the UK for over 130 children and young adults with cancer. It is an all-expenses-paid trip of a lifetime. They tour historical sites, visit local amusement parks, see a West End production, and dance and sing every evening.
The kids put it best in their own words: “Every time I call home from here, they say, ‘You look so alive! You have strength and energy.’ Things I can’t do at home because I am too weak, I can do here,” said Chagit Weisberg
Zichron Menachem works closely with Israel’s leading medical professionals, who strongly believe that no child can be treated comprehensively without the support we provide.
Plans for our annual parents camp in the UK are underway for May 2023. This is a time to give parents a week’s respite where they can enjoy their time sightseeing London and connect with other parents suffering in the same way.
‘‘The support that I receive from being together with other mothers that are running between hospital beds and a household of kids gives me a support that no one else can give’’ Eliana Landsman - UK camp 2022
One of our popular activities are hair parties. It’s a time for uniting children that wish to do a positive act of kindness by donating their hair for the making of wigs both in Israel and in the UK. In the past we have been approached by young and older members of our community to produce purpose made peyos and sheitels. This is all supplied free of charge with the hair donated by our wonderful young girls.
‘‘Putting on my lace top wig makes me feel like I can go back to school with my friends and look like everyone else, I am so thankful that there are so many kind girls willing to make such a sacrifice to help me feel normal.’’ Ora aged 12
We are grateful to our many supporters in the UK, that enable us to help children and adults with cancer, regain their self-respect and confidence.
