As Chair of Governors, and the parent of 4 Archer children, I have seen first hand the transformative affects the school has on students and the local community when it has the facilities and resources to make magic happen. 

That's why I'm helping to fundraise for a project that is close to my heart – to build a state-of-the-art performing arts studio at Archer, providing exceptional rehearsal and performance space for drama, dance, music, and creative expression.

Across the country, performing arts programmes are in decline. But the Archer Academy is taking a stand. Creativity is a core part of their curriculum, helping students build confidence, resilience, and mental wellbeing – critical in today’s challenging world.

Every child should have access to creative subjects – not just those who can afford private education or extracurricular activities. That’s why I’m supporting Archer, a state school, in building this transformative space. And this new studio will benefit more than just students – it will also serve the wider community. As proud Headteacher of Archer Academy for 10 years, I am thrilled that we’re in the final stages of fundraising for a transformative performing arts studio. After three years of planning and fundraising, it’s time to make this vision a reality - a much-needed space for drama, dance, music, and creative expression at our school.

With performing arts programmes declining across the country, Archer Academy is taking a stand - ensuring creativity remains at the heart of our curriculum, and helping students build confidence, resilience, life skills, and wellbeing.

As an Ofsted-outstanding state school, we believe every child should have access to creative subjects. The arts don’t just entertain, they transform lives, fostering self-expression, shaping ideas and communicating emotions, crucial for today's young people. My son Timothée joined Archer Academy in September, starting Year 7. Timothée has Williams Syndrome, and seeing him thrive at Archer—a school deeply committed to inclusivity and excellence—has been incredibly rewarding. Across the UK, arts funding is declining dramatically, with a 42% drop in GCSE creative subject entries since 2010. I will be crowdfunding for the Archer Academy this weekend (21-23 March), to raise money for a new creative and performing arts studio for the school. The school community has raised already over £350k and is aiming to raise another £150k over the next 3 days to ensure the build can start in June.

I won’t be running a marathon or jumping out of a plane - all I am doing is asking lots of people for a small donation towards this goal. I am aiming to raise at least £1,000 this weekend by reaching out to all of you, and many other crowdfunding champions will be doing the same. By contacting lots of people and asking for small donations (e.g. £10 or £20 would be amazing!), we hope to reach our £150k goal. And thanks to an incredibly generous donor, every pound you give will be DOUBLED.

The Archer Academy is Nuria’s school and - with a bit of luck - she will be rehearsing for her GCSE dance pieces in the new studio. But this is not about Nuria or us. It’s about creating a space for all young people in our local state comprehensive school and wider community for many years to come. The creative and performing arts are a great leveller – you don’t need to be sporty, academic or wealthy to act or dance. Enabling young people to take part inspires creativity, personal expression, camaraderie, confidence, resilience and so many other things one can’t capture on an academic score card.
