Why are we building a monument to Coastal Forces and the RNVR?
Coastal Forces played a critical role in two world wars, but their exploits are often overlooked. The men of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, ‘hostilities only’ ratings and the Women’s Royal Naval Service achieved extraordinary things in the name of freedom. Most people have heard of the Battle of Britain, D Day and the Battle of the Atlantic. Not so many know about the Battle of the Narrow Seas, the Shetland Bus or the hundreds of actions fought in tiny ships in shallow waters in the middle of the night at point blank range. All that’s about to change…

… because these are amazing stories that deserve to be told.

This landmark monument will greet around a million annual visitors to the wonderful Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and as well as inspiring us to learn more about Coastal Forces, it will direct us to the permanent exhibition ‘Night Hunters: the Royal Navy’s Coastal Forces at War’ at the National Museum of the Royal Navy’s Priddy’s Hard site, the National Military Powerboat Collection on the waterfront and Boathouse No 4, which houses the Navy’s small boat collection.

The Coastal Forces Heritage Trust (CFHT) and Portsmouth Historic Quarter have joined forces to deliver the project, with early donations already secured. Now, CFHT are calling on supporters, veterans, and the wider public to help bring the vision to life by taking part in our online crowdfunding event.

This Crowdfunding campaign is just one part of our efforts to raise the money we need to finish the Monument. As you can imagine, the cost of raw materials is soaring…

So we really encourage everyone to continue to support this campaign – the more we can raise here, the better.

In the event that we raise more than we need for the Monument, funds will go to our education programme, funding days at sea in Coastal Forces craft for young people.
