Avrohom is our delightful 16 year old son with Downs Syndrome. He’s a wonderful young man with a very endearing personality, a great sense of humour and always has a smile on his face. He is never happier then when he is amongst his friends, and this summer, BeH, he is very much looking forward to attending Camp Horizons for the first time. Could you help us to help Avrohom realise his dream of going to camp and we extend to you our heartfelt appreciation in anticipation of your generosity. Wishing you much Brocha V’hatzlocha and much yiddisher nachas from your own families.

25 Years of Transformation
Until 25 years ago, summer holidays for families with special needs children were anything but a holiday. These families couldn’t go away or even enjoy their summer at home. Life with a special needs child is too interrupted: by medical crises, round-the-clock needs, and non-verbal meltdowns.

Birth of Camp Horizon
This is why Camp Horizon was born. It welcomes campers ages 3 and up from all over Europe. Camp offers two weeks of blissful fun in the beautiful English countryside. While the campers have a blast, their families get the desperately needed respite to rejuvenate and move forward.

Challenges and Costs
However, the costs of running a camp for special needs campers are exorbitant—at least three times as much as a regular camp. Every camper requires:

A space for the camper: Children with disabilities need a lot of space.
A space for their carer: Each camper has 1:1 support around the clock.
A space for support staff: Division heads, program heads, medics, photographers, videographers, and Kitchen staff ensuring all campers needs are best met.

In addition to these, there are trip costs, wheelchair-accessible transport costs, and on-site entertainment costs. Providing specialized meals to meet various dietary needs and preferences of the campers also adds to the expense. These meals are often more expensive than standard camp food, but they are essential for our campers.

Funding and Support
While we receive some help from the council for some of our campers, dozens of campers are equally challenging for their parent's families but are not supported by the council. Camp Horizon works tirelessly to fundraise these costs to avoid leaving these campers behind and to prevent their parent's families from skipping summer.

New Collaboration
This year, we are thrilled to announce our collaboration with Misgav Girls, increasing our total number of campers to over 100. This partnership allows us to reach even more families, providing much-needed respite and joy.
