The Johannesburg Jewish Helping Hand (Chevrah Kadisha) supports almost one-quarter of Johannesburg’s Jewish community, touching the lives of over 11 000 of Jews every year. We rely on private funding for at least 70% of our annual budget of $18M, to distribute funds to almost 900 vulnerable Jewish families for food, rent, education and healthcare. We also house close to 1,000 indigent residents permanently in our aged homes, disabilities centres and childcare facilities. Although the local Johannesburg community supports us generously, our donor community is shrinking due to emigration as welfare and social services need increases due to inflationary pressures and a failing State infrastructure. Help from our expat community has become critical. Hence our international campaign, One Tribe, from 15 – 17 October 2023.
No matter where in the world they live, South African Jews still care deeply for the country and community they grew up in, because we’ll always be one family and One Tribe.
