I have spent the past 19 years as a professional in this organisation. It has been my life's work. I am humbled every day by the awesome responsibility both in terms of the number of people we reach but also the depth of services and complexity of the work.

The demographics of the SA Jewish community are ever changing. The community is ageing and more people need our assistance as the years pass. What remains constant is our commitment to those in need, our devotion to our community and our faith that we will be here for every Jew in need, no matter what.

Our local community is truly awesome. They have generously supported and volunteered for over 130 years. But given the high rates of emigration and growing welfare needs, we can no longer sustain these activities without overseas help. If not for South Africans living overseas, who else can we turn to?

Therefore, I am raising much needed funds for The Johannesburg Jewish Helping Hand (Chevrah Kadisha/"The Chev") and I need your help.

Initially established as a burial society, 97% of our resources are now targeted at the living, largely looking after the elderly, impoverished, and disabled Jews. We care for 1 in every 5 Jews left in Johannesburg (nearly 10 000 people) with every human, psychological and welfare need, from cradle to grave. Our annual budget is $20 million, of which 70% must be privately funded, and with the increase in emigration, our donor pool is shrinking. Help from the expat community is now critical.

This is a tremendous opportunity for all South Africans to support the community you grew up in, so please give where you can!

(Tax receipts are available for US/UK/Canada/Australia/South Africa and Israel)

On behalf of The Johannesburg Jewish Helping Hand, thank you for your generosity.

I was honoured to join the Board of Governors of this remarkable organisation two years ago.

I have always been community-orientated and appreciated the role the Jewish Helping Hand plays in Johannesburg. But never could I imagine just how magnificent and awesome this organisation really is. The passion of the professional management, the reach of its services and the level of care and sensitivity is truly inspiring. This is a vital cause and something that is very close to my heart. Its survival is not negotiable and we cannot do it without your help! I would be most grateful if you are able to support our campaign

I was privileged to join the Johannesburg Jewish Helping Hand four years ago.  I hadn’t known, as a former lawyer and securities specialist, that what I would do every day could feed my soul as it does my mind.

I have volunteered for the JJHH since I was 18 (a long time ago!) and thought I knew the organisation as our community burial and welfare lifeline.  I’ve now learnt that its scale, complexity, reach, adaptability and compassion are unprecedented and I will never stop learning about all that it does for our community.

In the meantime I’m also learning some of life’s greatest lessons here.  There by the grace of God … needing assistance is anyone’s challenge.  The only ‘no’ we are entitled to, is No Jew Gets Left Behind. Support is only chesed when it imparts dignity above all to the recipient.    And that the best of humanity still lives, nowhere more than in those who grew up in the Joburg Jewish community.

We cannot do this alone and the community cannot do without us – so you’re our hope.  Please donate!

As a young boy of 11 years of age, I went to work as my father was gravely ill. I started at Kaufies bakery from 7am to 7pm on weekends for 45 cents an hour!

The Chevrah Kadisha helped my family and I am a product of our community’s chesed. I am where I am because of the extraordinary kindness of others during my formative years.

Our community is in desperate trouble.

I am personally reaching out to you knowing your deep roots and connection to South Africa.

In my capacity as a board member of the Chevrah Kadisha, I am raising much needed funds for The Johannesburg Jewish Helping Hand (Chevrah Kadisha/"The Chev") to support the amazing work that they do for over 10,000 vulnerable Jews.
