Receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis is devastating, but the minute we did the team at St Gemma’s became involved and I can’t thank them enough for the care, support and compassion they showed us us both. They enabled Pete and I to spend our last weeks together, being cared for and supported so we could truly make the most of the time we had left. Pete died at St Gemma’s feeling safe and loved, and I continue to be supported by the Bereavement Support and Counselling team. What they do is amazing and it’s a privilege to be able to, in some small way, help ensure others can benefit in the way Pete and I did.

My lovely Dad, Les, was cared for at home by the St Gemma’s specialist nursing team and died on the Moors Ward at St Gemma’s in 2013. Family members received vital support from the St Gemma’s bereavement team after he died. He was funny, clever, rugby mad and we miss him so much. 

St Gemma’s gave us such precious time together at the end of Dad’s life. With care from St Gemma’s he became himself again rather than being consumed by his symptoms. We got him back, as a husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend.  I will be forever grateful to the St Gemma’s team for their compassion, care and expertise, for him and for us, his family.

We were so privileged to have St. Gemma’s look after my brother-in- law Alan Brown in the final days of his life. In the hospice he felt safe, loved and cared for and we, as a family, felt equally nurtured and supported.

Every patient at St. Gemma’s is treated as an individual with respect, dignity and compassion. We had quality time and space to leave Alan in the best possible way.

On Sunday 21 and Monday 22 April, The Precious Time Appeal will be live. During this 36-hour period every donation made to the appeal will be doubled! Doubling your impact to St Gemma’s Hospice and our vital care in the Leeds Community.

The Precious Time Appeal tells the story of the incredible care given by St Gemma’s Hospice at the end of life. If you are using hospice services, however long you have – months, weeks, days – it is not long and it is very precious.

Our Appeal film, shares the story of Ursula and her husband Peter, illustrating how our team does everything we can to make this time as liveable and precious as possible.

But Ursula’s story is just one of many, each of our incredible Champions of the appeal has shared their own story on their pages, about why St Gemma’s is special to them.

Demand for our services is growing all the time and this fundraising appeal will give our kind supporters, like you, the chance to double the impact of your support.
