As a Holocaust educator I am determined that the truthful facts relating to current rising antisemitism, intolerance and racism are highlighted. I am also passionate about ensuring Holocaust survivor testimonies are preserved and used for future education.

7th October 2023 was a day that traumatised the Jewish people and the state of Israel, and will never be forgotten. On that tragic day, the Jewish people suffered the worst antisemitic massacre since the Holocaust when Hamas terrorists invaded Israel, murdering some 1,200 people and taking over 250 hostage, some of whom have still not been returned to their loved ones and families. There is now an urgent need to remember the past in order to defend the future as our brave soldiers in Israel are doing. We pray every day for the safe return of the remaining hostages and for peace to return to Israel.

Yad Vashem UK supports Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Centre in Jerusalem, through its many educational projects like Guardian of the Memory and Bar and Bat-mitzvah twinning. It also sponsors an annual Jewish schools and organisations teachers’ seminar at the International School of Holocaust studies at Yad Vashem, and financially supports the Fed’s ‘My Voice’ project, enabling Holocaust survivors to publish their life stories in their own voice.

I would be grateful for a donation, however small, which will enable this worthwhile charity to continue its wonderful work in Holocaust remembrance, education, and fighting the social media myths and untruths, especially during these challenging times.

Remembering the 1942 Kletzk Ghetto Uprising
I am a son of Kletzk, Belarus. My late father's paternal grandparents came from there. It is largely remembered for the uprooting of its Yeshiva by Rabbi Aahron Kotler from Kletzk to Lakewood, New Jersey. But I bet you didn't know that it was one of a few places where during the Shoah the residents of the ghetto resisted its liquidation.

On 21 July 1942, the Belarusian police under the command of German officers entered the ghetto and were met with resistance from the imprisoned Jews, who shot down three German officers and four Belarusian policemen. The prisoners then set fire to the ghetto and around 400 people managed to escape to the forest, whilst those that remained were murdered. The escapees were shot in the Starina wilderness, and the bodies of those who had fallen in the uprising were also taken there. Altogether, more than 5,000 Jews from Kletzk were buried in two mass graves. One of them is located near a sandpit, at the end of Nieświeska Street, the other – near the Starina forest. Some of the escapees joined a partisan unit led by General F. Kapusta.

Before the German occupation of Kletzk, on 26 July 1941 the town had been inhabited by 4,396 Jews, making up 67% of the population. Only 25 Jews who had been in Kletzk when the Germans occupied the town survived the Shoah.

Thankfully, many other sons and daughters of Kletzk had had the good fortune to leave Kletzk many years earlier and it therefore falls on us to remember the long history of the Jews of Kletzk that stretches all the way back to 1529. Imagine, 413 years of Jewish presence snuffed out in the space of 12 months.

So I remember the town my great grandparents and my great great grandmother left to come to London and recall with pride that despite huge risk and adversity the Jews of Kletzk resisted their final liquidation.

At a time when we see an increase in Jew hate and holocaust denial, we must stand tall and proud and inspire the Anglo Jewish community and the UK as a whole to never forget and Defend the Future, because if we fail in this vital mission, society fails as a whole.

Please join me in supporting the very important work that Yad Vashem UK does and help them to inspire others to Remember the Past and Defend the Future.

Thank you for your support.

Yad Vashem UK is working to ensure that young people across the United Kingdom learn about the Shoah and understand what the words genocide, Holocaust and ethnic cleansing really mean. Our educators are working to bring balance and truth to the current discourse. Our Twinning programme continues to grow and this year over 300 Bar and Bat Mitzvah students will highlight the plight of a young victim of the Shoah. Our teachers’ seminar guides Jewish and non-Jewish teachers through the very best practice of Holocaust education using the top world renowned researchers and resources of Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. We provide financial support to Yad Vashem’s research and educational programmes through the provision of much needed funding.

Our children deserve a world free of antisemitism. Help us make that world a reality.
